Rodgers Smith was born on January 10, 1954, in Chicago, Illinois to the union of Floyd and Eva Smith. As the fourth of nine children, Rodgers learned the importance of family. The Smith family relocated to California in 1963, where Rodgers attended 111th Street Elementary School, Whaley Jr. High and Dominguez High School.

He married the love of his life, Kathleen in 1982, and together they raised their three children in Compton, California. Rodgers took great pride in providing for his wife and children. In 2008, after thirty-seven years of service and dedication working as a truck driver for Costco Fire Protection, Rodgers retired. He and Kathy enjoyed the next ten years, finally as empty nesters.  Rodgers was a true family man. He loved his siblings in a special way and was a friend to many. Rodgers would often Bar-B-Q and host family gatherings.  He loved to debate, crack jokes and always had good advice to give! Rodgers joined Brister Memorial Baptist Church in 2016. He looked forward to going to church where his desire and joy for the Lord grew like wildfire.

Rodgers was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy; parents, Floyd and Eva Smith; and eldest brother Carl Smith. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, children: Evette Smith Ellis (Clyde), Brandon Smith (Angela), Latonia Cullens (Charles); grandchildren: Charles, Dominic, Kyra, Caleb, Carter, Cayden, and Adrianna; siblings: Calvin Smith (Anne), Floyd Smith Jr., Jennifer Murray (Derrick), Carolyn Valmore (Eddie), Carol Smith, Cynthia Smith, and Sidney Smith (Annette). Rodgers also leaves precious memories with his nieces and nephews who dearly loved their âUncle Rodgâ and a host of family, and friends who will cherish his memory forever.
